(Math 5/4 - Prealgebra)
I. Parents, Read this first:
- This placement test is not a year-end test. If your student used Saxon Math, see this article: Placement for Saxon Math students.

A parent or teacher should supervise the test.

Time Limit: This is a three-page test. Allow the student one hour for each page. Do not give the entire test in one sitting. You may want to complete the test on three separate days. If that is not possible, allow several hours between one page and the next page.

Allow the student to work until he/she cannot answer 3 or more questions in a row.

No calculator and no help from a parent or teacher.

The student should show all work on a separate piece of paper.
II. Print the Test: Placement Test for 4-8th Grades
III. Use the Answer Key at the end of the Placement Test to grade it.
IV. Placement Guide:
14 or fewer correct from QUESTIONS 1-20:
- Average-to-accelerated fourth grader: Begin DIVE + Saxon 5/4, Third Edition
- Below average fourth grader: Consider Saxon Math 3 or go slowly through DIVE + Saxon 5/4, Third Edition
- Third grade or lower: Take the PLACEMENT TEST for K-3
Sixteen or more correct from QUESTIONS 1–20:
Sixteen or more correct from QUESTIONS 21-40 and 16 or more correct from QUESTIONS 1-20:
Sixteen or more correct from QUESTIONS 41-60 and 16 or more correct from QUESTIONS 21-40:
- Begin Shormann Pre-Algebra or take the Placement Test for Shormann Algebra 1.
