Instructions for Precalculus Placement Test

The prerequisite for this course is completion of either:

- Shormann Algebra 2 or Saxon Algebra 2, 3rd Edition

- Or, any other Algebra 2 AND Geometry*

*If your student has not taken Geometry, instead of taking a stand-alone geometry course, Dr. Shormann recommends these students take Shormann Algebra 2 with Integrated Geometry. This will review and develop fluency in their algebra skills while they learn the needed geometry concepts. Learn More: Algebra 1 & 2- No Geometry

To ensure readiness, we recommend all students who are new to Shormann Math to take a placement test.

1. How to Take the Test

  • If the last math course taken was by Saxon or Shormann, see Saxon or Shormann Math

  • A parent or teacher should supervise the test.

  • Time Limit: 1 Hour

  • No calculators and no help from a parent or teacher.

  • The student should show all work on a separate piece of paper.

2. Print the Test: Placement Test for Precalculus

3. Use the Answer Key at the end of the Placement Test to grade it.

4. Placement Guide:

8+ Correct: Passed - ready for Shormann Precalculus with Trigonometry

7 or Less Correct: Failed - Shormann Algebra 2 with Integrated Geometry is recommended but take the placement test to ensure readiness. This course will build mastery and fluency in both geometry and algebra, while providing excellent preparation for Precalculus, the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. It also includes a 3-6 week CLEP College Algebra prep course which earns 1 high school math credit and up to 3 college credits. If you pass the CLEP Practice exam,  included in the course, you can list it on your transcript as Advanced Algebra. Take the Placement Test for Algebra 2

If you used Saxon Algebra 2, 3rd Edition Students

There are about 20 geometry concepts that were taught in Shormann Algebra 2 that were not taught in Saxon. To bridge this gap, we have created Geometry Prep Lessons to prepare you for Shormann Precalculus. They are included in the Shormann Precalculus eLearning course and we recommend all Saxon Algebra 2 students complete them.
